South Pacific Destinations - Tonga

Beautiful Tonga beach

The kingdom of Tonga, also known as "The Friendly Islands" for the warm reception Captain Cook received on his first visit in 1773, is situated just west of the International date Line. Thus it is said by the island's tourism industry, that Tonga is 'the place where time begins', although others might observe that it is the place where time stands still, such is the pace of life in Tonga.

There plenty of opportunities to get well off the beaten track in Tonga's many islands, with small forested islets beckoning here and there. The Ha'apai group of islands offer some of the best deserted white beaches and colourful reefs. However, the Vava'u group and Eua are the activity destinations of Tonga, with sea Kayaking, fishing surfing and diving available.

Be one of the first in the world to greet the day in Vava'u, the northern-most of Tonga's three main island groups, where sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, colourful coral reefs and coconut plantations abound.

The lagoon at Vava'u, renowned for its 130-foot visibility, is the perfect place to explore an underwater world teeming with tropical fish, giant clams, manta rays, sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and, July through October, humpback whales. Swim, snorkel, scuba dive, or simply relax on the island's pristine coral-sand beaches.
