M/S Paul Gauguin Cruises - Australs & the Society Islands - 11 nights

A map of the Australs and Society Islands 11 night cruise

During the height of the Austral summer (July to October), humpback whales teem in the waters off Rurutu, delighting divers with their graceful antics and haunting songs.

The Gauguin pays a visit to this special sanctuary on a unique itinerary that also features the idyllic Society Islands. Don't miss this one-time sailing, as Paul Gauguin Cruises' Chairman Richard Bailey joins the ship.

Rurutu is a small island of about 36 square miles and is unique in Polynesia as it features a smaller lagoon that is surrounded by steep cliffs that have caves with stalactites and stalagmites which have been created by water drops over millions of years.

At the end of autumn, humpback whales leave their cold, rich feeding grounds and head for warm tropical waters, fasting until they return to the cold waters in early spring. It has been found that Rurutu is a place where the pregnant females give birth to their young and then feed them until they have gained enough weight and strength to endure the long journey back to their feeding grounds. Rurutu's shallow waters are ideal, being free of deep-water predators, and in the event of a storm there are calm lagoons on both sides of the island offering shelter.
